A periodontist is a dentist with expertise in implant placement as well as the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of gum disease, a chronic inflammatory condition that affects the gums and bone that supports the teeth. In addition to receiving substantial training in both of these fields, periodontists also undergo three years of extra schooling after graduating from dental school.
